Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region

Villages on Kashiragashima Island

The only stone church within the prefecture was designed and built by Tetsukawa Yosuke under the direction of Father Osaki.

Bringing stonemasons from outside the prefecture, the believers dedicated 11 years of their lives to building their church, quarrying stones on the island and piling them up to create an embodiment of their faith.

The interior, which has no pillars, is decorated with shades of blue and images of Goto camellias, giving it a unique and lively atmosphere.
