Organization:

ITCN has two research divisions as described below.  The Basic Technology Division has three research sections and performs work in the field of mechanical and electronic engineering, information processing and industrial design, with a strong emphasis upon the advancement of major leading industry in Nagasaki prefecture.  The Applied Technology Division also has three research sections and acts in the field of industrial materials, food processing, biotechnology, marine engineering and environmental science, much energy being spent on application research and guidance for actual demands from regional industry as well as on social problems related to environmental preservation in Nagasaki.

Brief Introduction of Research Sections:Mechanical Engineering Section

This section is requested to improve mechanical technique and materials processing and also to develop new products in the field of manufacturing industry.

  1.       Machining conditions for providing good finished surface and good chip control as well as reduced machining time and improved machining efficiency
  2.       Thermal spraying for the repair of rejected cast products and the production of wear-resisting injection mold
  3.       Cast molding for oxide-particle dispersed magnesium alloy for acoustic and lightweight materials
  4.       Heat treatment and surface modification for imparting good wear resistance and thermal protection to steel materials
  5.       New instrument systems combined with electrical and optical controls such as environment-monitoring equipment, 3-D measuring system and optical evaluation system

In addition to the above activities, we help local enterprises to solve various problems related to the manufacturing industry by utilizing our accumulated knowledge and know-how of mechanical engineering.

Electronic Engineering Section

The ultimate goal of our research is to achieve newly designed intelligent control systems on technological bases of electronics and computer engineering, and to transfer the above techniques to local enterprises.

  1. Intelligent control system for high performance appliances and factory automation
  2.       Image processing system using advanced methods
  3.      Computer interface for the physically disabled

The typical examples of the projects are "Eye-Controller (environmental control system for the disabled", "Fish-type Discriminating System", "Ship Master (ship designing system)", "Photo-receiver", "Network type care managing system for long-term care insurance".

Information Processing & Design Section

Our section is engaged in the technological supports on computer-aided design and engineering for product development process, in addition to the development of original soft wares demanded for advanced information-oriented society.

  1.       Information processing system and its application to multimedia products
  2. )      CAD / CAM / CAE technologies for shipbuilding and related machine industries
  3.      Package design of local specialty products using a computer graphics technique

Based on a financial support of national program, we cooperate with another section to raise the level of design simulation and machining techniques for small and medium-sized shipbuilding companies.

Materials Science Section

Our section focuses on developing new functional materials like organic photorchromics, oxide photocatalyst, and diamond-like carbon as well as on surface modification technology for imparting high performance such as corrosion- and wear-resistance to metals, ceramics and polymers. The current research themes are as follows;

  1.       Thermal spraying for the repair of rejected cast products and the production of wear-resisting injection mold
  2.       Surface modification of materials by Plasma Source Ion Implantation (PSII)
  3.      Hot-dip plating for protective coatings
  4.      Theoretical molecular design with computer-aided chemistry

The second subject (PSII technology) led to a national research project (based on STA) for three years from 1996 to 1998 and its practical applications are now promoted in collaboration with many companies.

Food ScienceBiotechnology Section

In response to on-going changes of eating habit and living circumstance, this section is dedicated to technology developments on the commercial application of new or improved food product, food processing, food preservation, food package and biotechnological approach to the quality selection of pearl oyster.

  1.      New food products using advanced food processing
  2.       Breeding of Sake yeasts by interspecific protoplast fusion, and its utilization to brew a new type of Sake
  3.       Biotechnological approach to the quality selection of pearl oyster
  4.       Extraction of utilizable materials from biological resources, and its application to functional food for health

It is our important work to contribute greatly to the promotion of local food processing industry and brewing industry through our research activities.

Marine Engineering & Environmental Science Section

Much effort has been directed to the research and technological developments for reducing pollution caused by industrial production and human's activities.  Our research targets are as follows;

  1.       Cleaning up sea water pollution in closed area
  2.      Effective utilization of unused resources from food factories by micro organic function
  3.       Nurturing industries engaged in solving environmental problems of sea area

We seek for new businesses in environmental field and we devote ourselves to assist them with special technologies such as satellite remote sensing and micro organic functions.
